Our family looks Chinese so we can blend in with the crowd. At the same time, we stand out, because we speak English to each other. This seems especially true in our new neighborhood in Taichung. People in stores and restaurants all know us, even if we've only been there one time. They always ask about our backgrounds and seem surprised that my parents are Taiwanese. I can't count the number of times I've had to tell people (in Chinese!) that my parents are from Taiwan, I was born in the states, we're at the American school...
People are also very friendly with Elias. We usually think it's only the foreign-looking kids (blond hair and blue eyes) that get attention from Taiwanese people, but Elias also gets lots of attention. People like to talk to him, take pictures of him, and give him food. Today, on our walk back from the market, the lady at the donut place said it looks like Elias has gained some weight since she last saw him. Then she ran and got him a donut so he'd gain even more! Here's a picture of Elias enjoying a few bites of his donut. Don't worry, we shared it. He didn't eat the whole thing himself.
